Health plan employees help an urban food desert thrive
This year, Aetna Better Health of Maryland has "adopted" the Park Heights Community Health Alliance (PHCHA) Urban Oasis project. The Urban Oasis project is a 9-month, annual community gardening effort that promotes sustainability and the benefits of the local food movement, along with neighborhood beautification, in an urban food desert area of Baltimore. Through this partnership, PHCHA will be able to provide fresh vegetables to community residents generated from the 2-acres of gardening space.
Recently, Aetna Better Health of Maryland employees participated in the "Big Dig" kick-off event to turn over the soil to prepare for upcoming planting. Employees will continue to provide support throughout the gardening season, with planting, pruning, harvesting and distribution of the crops.
