Focusing on health equity for blood pressure control

By Shaan Trotter - Health Equity Officer

With fall upon us and winter right around the corner, we’re more likely to be less active. This season, let’s make managing our blood pressure a top priority. High blood pressure—also known as hypertension—is a common health issue. When left uncontrolled, it can cause heart disease, stroke and other serious problems.

High blood pressure often develops over time and you may not notice symptoms right away. It can be caused by unhealthy habits, like not getting enough exercise or eating nutritious food.

Finding healthy and affordable food options can be tough right now, but staying on track with your goal of managing blood pressure is possible. Consider these budget-friendly options:

  • Canned, dried or frozen fruits and vegetables
  • Products labeled low-sodium, reduced sodium or no salt added
  • Unseasoned frozen vegetables
  • Canned fruit packed in water or natural juices
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

In addition to getting exercise and eating a healthy diet, there are other ways to control your blood pressure. Lifestyle changes don’t have to be hard. Start with small steps like:

  • Not smoking
  • Not drinking alcohol
  • Keeping a healthy weight
  • Managing stress

Causes of high blood pressure can go beyond physical health. Not everyone has the same access to health care. This can lead to health gaps, which are worse in diverse and low-income communities. According to The American Heart Association, African American and Hispanic communities have higher rates of high blood pressure. They also have a harder time getting the care they need.

Limited access to doctors, healthy food and resources make managing blood pressure harder for people in these communities. Without support, it can be hard to stay healthy.

Aetna Better Health® of Illinois understands these challenges. The first step is knowing your options. Aetna offers many benefits to help manage high blood pressure. We help you find doctors in your area so you can get regular checkups. We also give home blood pressure monitors to our members who have high blood pressure or are pregnant. In 2024, we began offering free meal delivery and personal nutrition services for those who qualify. You can get information to help you track your health at home, too. Our Community Health Program is a great resource. This program helps members with support such as:

  • Choosing a doctor
  • Using health benefits
  • Getting preventive care and screenings
  • Accessing community programs for food, housing or clothing

Everyone is unique. That’s why culture is important to understand when talking about health. Aetna works with local doctors and community groups to provide care that respects each person’s background. Care managers are aware of cultural differences that can impact a person’s health risk. These experts help members create health plans focused on better nutrition and exercise, which can lower the risk of high blood pressure. Our team is here to listen and provide members with the care they need.

Remember, you deserve to be as healthy as possible. Aetna gives you the support and tools you need to stay healthy, with benefits that go beyond regular health coverage. It’s care you can trust and rely on.
