Embracing strength in Breast Cancer Awareness Month

By Lakshmi Emory, MD, MPH - Chief Medical Officer

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to honor strength and hope. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except for skin cancers. It’s likely you or someone you know has been impacted by the disease. This is why it’s important to come together, learn more and focus on awareness and prevention during this month.

1. Community connection

Build connections with your community by joining events that bring people together. Aetna Better Health® of Illinois will be at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event at Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago this month. Our team will be there to share information and resources. Find out more about how you can join here.

2. Knowledge is power

Knowledge is key in the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer happens when abnormal cells in the breast grow too fast and form a tumor. Know your risks. Family history, age and any changes in your breasts are all factors. If you have questions, ask your doctor.

3. Redefine awareness

Awareness is more than just pink ribbons. It's about building a community of support and care. Mental health care is important for those who are diagnosed with breast cancer. Members can call our behavioral health hotline at 1-866-329-4701 (TTY: 711). Choose “1” for behavioral health crisis. You can talk to someone 24 hours a day. They will connect you to the right help.

4. Prevention as a first step

Build a lifestyle of prevention. Stay active, eat healthy and limit alcohol and tobacco. Don’t forget to schedule your annual checkup, too. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts. Aetna Better Health® of Illinois covers this annual screening for members starting at age 40. Members may be eligible to receive a $25 reward for getting the exam through Aetna Better Care® Rewards. And from now until the end of 2024, eligible members can double the reward and get $50. We can help you set up a screening. Call Member Services at 1-866-329-4701 (TTY: 711).

Let’s celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month with unity and strength. By connecting, learning and speaking up, we can turn awareness into action. Let’s honor those affected and build a community that stays strong together.
